Three and a half hours out of Salt Lake lies Baker, Nevada. This small town sits on the border of Great Basin National Park. We were hoping that our October trip would be greeted with fall foliage.
With only two days for this trip, we were able to explore Baker, with a staggering population of 68.
We stayed at the Stargazer Inn, a very small lodge located smack in the middle of town. The woman running the show was organized and so friendly. She even had dogs in her office that she was more than happy to let you enjoy the company of.
We spent the day hiking out in Great Basin, but to our dismay we found that winter had come swiftly for Baker, and our hikes consisted of barren trees, dark skies, and dead leaves. The sun escaped us quickly and we retreated back down the mountain.
Kerouac’s Restaurant *permanetly closed* served us for the evening, tons of cocktails to choose from and good dishes, save the brussel sprouts. No Bueno.
Morning came quickly and we had to head back home, a long unremarkable drive through Millard County. Though, as always, seeing a few abandoned homes is a delight.
